MEDICAL RESEARCH

AN INNOVATIVE PROJECT TO SLOW THE PROGRESSION OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Thanks to research projects funded over the past 25 years by AISM and its Foundation, it has become clear that rehabilitation—previously considered merely a tool for neuromotor re-education—is a genuine treatment capable of slowing the progression of disability in people with multiple sclerosis, as it stimulates neural plasticity; this occurs primarily during aerobic activity.

CARE FOR CHILDREN TO BUILD THE FUTURE

The project is aimed at pediatric patients at Lacor Hospital in Northern Uganda. In Northern Uganda, 84% of children live in conditions of multidimensional poverty. Diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, anemia, and malnutrition put the lives of young children at risk every day.

CARING FOR MOTHERS

The project supports maternal health at Lacor Hospital to address the alarming maternal mortality rate. With 189 maternal deaths per 100,000 births and limited access to skilled prenatal care, Uganda remains among the 50 countries worldwide with the highest maternal mortality rates. Lacor Hospital, along with its three satellite health centers, provides over 30,000 prenatal visits and assists with more than 9,000 births each year, offering a comprehensive care pathway that includes ultrasounds, vaccinations, medications, nutritional counseling, and delivery assistance, including in emergency situations.

MIRTAZAPINE: A DRUG FOR RETT SYNDROME

The Canali ETS Foundation supported the world’s first clinical trial of the drug Mirtazapine for Rett syndrome. Rett syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects girls and is the second leading cause of intellectual disability worldwide. In 95% of cases, it is caused by a mutation in the MeCP2 gene located on the X chromosome

Associazione Spazio 3R Riciclo Ricucio Riuso Impresa Sociale is a sustainable artisanal tailoring atelier in Milan aimed at women in vulnerable situations to help them stitch together the pieces of their lives for full social and work integration. Italian and foreign women with different needs, united by the thread of tailoring interpreted with a view to sustainability (all fabrics and materials used are high quality leftovers from companies such as Canali). Tailoring thus becomes an opportunity to Re-Begin.

AUTOLOGOUS STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION IN PATIENTS WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation is considered a possible therapy for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Professor Matilde Inglese is coordinating a study in this field, which promises to write a very important chapter in the history of the fight against this disease.

MULTISENSORIAL ROOM

The Centro Diurno Disabili Sottosopra ('Over-under Day Center for the Disabled') of Macherio is able to serve up to 15 people with grave multiple disabilities with ages ranging from 15 to 65. Over the years, the multi-disciplinary team of neuropsychiatrists, pyschologists, educators, music therapists, art therapists, psychomotrists, physical therapists, nurses and social workers have used an approach called 'Basal Stimulation', consisting of transmitting to the patients a range of sensations and experiences that develop relational growth and the well-being of the individual. Through visual, tactile and auditory stimuli, calibrated to the needs of each subject, attention, contact and self-awareness and of others have been found to improve. The Multisensorial Room offers a range of luminous, musical, olfactory and tactile effects that involve all of the senses and that are personalized for each patient, allowing him or her to overcome or compensate for serious sensorial deficits. The set-up of the spaces involved offer the possibility of self-determination by supplying curious stimuli that encourage interaction with reality and with others.

CHILDREN'S HEART

The Cuore di Bimbi program aims to promote the development of cardio-surgical pediatrics at the Mulago di Kampala Hospital in Uganda, one of the most poverty-stricken countries in the world. Each day, around 40 children visit the hospital for a heart-related consultation. The project finances periodic missions of Italian volunteers from the Niguarda Hospital in Milan who go to Uganda to perform operations and improve the technical abilities of the local staff there. Their objective is to operate on 10 children during each mission, guaranteeing an excellent post-operation experience and follow-up to reduce risks and complications. The project was created in 2014 during which two missions in April and August were completed with a total of 11 children successfully operated on under the guidance of Doctor Stefano Marianeschi, leader of the Italian team

CENOBIO, A HOME FOR THE ELDERLY

This converted farmhouse is being restored to serve as an events location, a place for social vegetable gardens, cultural activities and as a group home for the elderly. Four non-profit organizations, which already work within Lambro park, have promoted the structural and functional restoration of the Molino San Gregorio farmhouse to transform it into an authentic living space in order to bring back the spirit of community.

REFRESHMENT IN THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

Ristoro nell’orto promotes the creation of an urban vegetable garden within Cascina Bellaria (a converted farmhouse) and an outdoor eating area with a glass greenhouse. The garden was designed to provide fresh produce to the restaurant, but above all, to start up an educational laboratory that collaborates with disabled persons.

HONEYCOMB DAYCARE CENTER

This project was launched to meet the pressing needs of children between the ages of 6 and 36 months and their mothers who find themselves in distress. The program provides a daycare service that will be available long-term. The program provides caregiving to the children and assistance in the economic re-integration of the mothers in the workplace as well as psychological support and reinforcement of their parenting skills.

A project with the aim of purchasing cars that are equipped for the disabled. The objective is to facilitate transportation for hospital visits, health treatments, attending socio-educational-assistance centers or protected workshops for the disabled.

A project aimed at supporting the Turu foster home, which houses around 50 kids aged 0 to 16 years old who have been victims of abandonment, domestic violence and exploitation. Some of these children suffer from psychophysical handicaps.

'LET’S DO IT!' TENDER

'Occupiamoci!' ('Let’s do it!') is a national tender, now in its second edition, whose goal is to foster the job placement of young people between the ages of 16 and 29 through social enterprise, promoting an inclusive job market with minor gaps in a social, cultural, geographical, generational and gender context. This project, promoted by Fondazione Mission Bambini, Fondazione Canali Onlus, Fondazione San Zen, the Unicredit Foundation and Manageritalia Milano, Gruppo Volontariato Professionale (a professional volunteer group). After the success of the first edition, thanks to which more than 100 young people throughout Italy were placed in jobs, this edition has seen 9 winning 'social business' projects, chosen from more than 200 entries. These new or potential entrepreneurial activities are created and managed by associations and cooperatives, mainly in sectors that are strategic for Italy like food and wine and tourism. The positions created by these initiatives, initially for 35 individuals, can increase over time.

FINALLY AT WORK, A CHANCE TO START OVER

This project is aimed at the professional training and integration of 12 young adults from 16 to 21 years old who are afflicted by situations of familial and/or social distress with a series of scholastic troubles or long periods of inactivity behind them. The program promotes the participants’ acquisition of professional skills and abilities in order to facilitate their entry into the working world. During this process, the participants also have the opportunity to improve their social skills, sense of responsibility and autonomy, discovering more about themselves and their interests. Additionally, the relationship they curate with the adults in the program – educators from the cooperative and company mentors – leads to more openness and faith in the social community and in the workplace.

LET'S RESTORE OURSELVES

A project aimed at training persons with disabilities, especially psychical, through furniture restoration. The objective is to develop autonomous work abilities through the acquisition of operational methodologies, knowledge of materials and typical tools of the trade. Each participant is then guided through a social-work integration.

SCHOOLS FOR STREET CHILDREN

The project is aimed at children living in desperate conditions on the street or in squatter neighbourhoods, in conditions on the brink of survival. The association seeks to help these defenceless children, who are often victims of physical, economic and sexual abuse, by taking them off the streets and into Sky Children’s education centres. In these centres, the children receive education, meals and psychological support so that they can attend the official school system.

I DON'T FIT IN AT SCHOOL

Support for the 'Prima scuola' (First school) program assisting 100 children with learning difficulties who attend secondary schools in Castano Primo (MI) and Macherio (MB). The children are aided at an educational, motivational, emotional, relational and organizational level through the implementation of an atmosphere of well-being and learning for all involved (kids, parents, teachers, professionals, volunteers).

DON MILANI 2

A collaboration with Fondazione Exodus Onlus on the project DonMilani 2 aimed at social and educational integration for children at risk of abandonment through an experimental approach that takes account of the specific problems of each child. The goal of the project is twofold: to help a group of students with serious learning difficulties in a concrete manner as well as to construct a new model for intervention that can be sustained and replicated in different contexts.

A project aimed at assisting children between the ages of 13 and 17 who come from backgrounds characterized by problematic and unsuccessful schooling. The final goal is to assist the children in graduating through a personalized program which takes account of each child’s particular needs, limits and, above all, potential.
